Ensemble Data Assimilation: The past, the present, and the future

In this talk, I begin with a basic overview of the underlying framework behind ensemble data assimilation. I will then discuss some of the benefits that can be derived from doing ensemble data assimilation in weather/climate dynamic systems, illustrated by using examples from my own research. I will also review attempts to extend ensemble data assimilation to fully nonlinear regimes with imperfect dynamic models, providing some examples from my own research on indistinguishable states. This talk will end with a discussion on interesting avenues for future research.
