Abstract
A prominent feature of geophysical fluid motion is the emergence and persistence of large scale coherent structure such as meandering jet stream in the atmosphere, gulf stream in the ocean, the Great Red Spot on Jupiter etc. Here we consider the effect of bombardments of random small scale vortices in two dimensional fluid system. Direct numerical simulation indicates the emergence of large scale coherent structure. Here we offer a rigorous theoretical explanation of this numerical fact under appropriate scaling assumption on the parameters. This is a joint work with Andrew Majda of New York University.
