T-O-Y 2007 Workshops Plan

Four interdisciplinary one-week workshops during Fall Spring 2006-2007 with both a tutorial research/expository component for two days and a contemporary research component for the last three days.

Workshop I. Geophysical Models at NCAR:
A Scoping and Synthesis Workshop

13-14 November 2006; Boulder, CO

The first workshop is intended as a scoping and brainstorming meeting where four NCAR modeling groups will interact with a large group of statisticians interested in the design and analysis of computer experiments. The NCAR geophysical models/groups are

  • Upper atmosphere model (TIEGCM) (HAO: Maura Hagan, Ray Roble, Art Richmond)
  • Single column boundary layer model (RAL/MMM: Josh Hacker)
  • Two dimensional turbulence in Navier Stokes flows (IMAGe: Annick Pouquet)
  • Land component of the NCAR climate model (CGD: Gordon Bonan; U Kansas: Johannes Feddema)
The intent is that concrete problems will be identified that will help structure the statistical working group activity at SAMSI. For each modeling group a statistical researcher will serve as a liason to guide collaboration among the modeling group and the statistical working groups.

Venue

The workshop will be held at the National Center for Atmospheric Research's Mesa Laboratory, Damon Room on Monday, 13 November. Tuesday, 14 November the meeting will be held at NCAR's Center Green Campus, Building 1.

Invited Speakers

Gordon Bonan, NCAR
Johannes Feddema, University of Kansas
Joshua Hacker, NCAR
Hanli Liu, NCAR
Pablo Mininni, NCAR
Art Richmond, NCAR
Mike Wiltberger, NCAR

Organizing Committee

Derek Bingham, Simon Fraser University
Montserrat Fuentes, North Carolina State University

SAMSI

The Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sci ences Institute (SAMSI) is a national institute whose vision is to forge a new synthesis of the statistical sciences and the applied mathematical sciences with disciplinary science to confront the very hardest and most important data- and model-driven scientific challenges. SAMSI achieves profound impact on both research and people by bringing together researchers who would not otherwise interact, and focusing the people, intellectual power and resources necessary for simultaneous advances in the statistical sciences and applied mathematical sciences that lead to ultimate resolution of the scientific challenges.

IMAGe

The Institute for Mathematics Applied to Geo sciences (IMAGe) is a group within the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) for the purpose of advancing mathematical theory and its application to all facets of NCAR and the geophysical community at large. IMAGe is substantially funded by the National Science Foundation. IMAGe is composed of three groups; the Data Assimilation Research Section, the Geophysical Statistics Project, and the Turbulence Numerics Team. For more information about IMAGe, including post-doc positions, please contact Doug Nychka.

NCAR

NCAR was formed in 1960 and has a broad interdisciplinary research program involving more that 1000 employees of which several hundred hold advanced scientific or engineering degrees. The NCAR scientific program includes nearly all aspects of the atmosphere including climate and weather, atmospheric chemistry, ecology, instrumentation, scientific computing, and economic and societal impacts of atmospheric processes.
